![]() Great question! I'd put my VLZ3 head to head with a Grace 101 or an FMR RNP any day of the week. Personally, I think the SM7 has plenty of color and prefer it with a transparent preamp. ![]() The Pre73 is VERY nice sounding with the SM7b if you're wanting to add more color. It was a great preamp back in it's day for the price, but there are much better preamps out now for the same price. JJ Audio does a mod on the DMP3 that cleans it up a little more. The DMP3 is okay, but i found it to be a little thin sounding and slightly cloudy sounding in stock form. I feel like the top end of the Rane gets very slightly "edgy" sounding when you crank it to the max. However, I like my VlZ3 slightly better than the Rane. I'm a really big fan of the Rane MS1b as well. Everyone one of those paired up with an SM7b had no noisey gain issues from what I recall. I've owned all of those preamps! LOL In fact, I still own a Gap Pre73 that I'm not using much these days, as I'm preferring the sound of clean, transparent preamps paired with warm mics.Īnways, those are all great preamps.
